Your answer

What adapter do I need?

Pick what you have and what you're connecting it to. You get the exact adapter or supply line that fits.

The end that screws onto a faucet, with threads inside and a rubber washer

Male pipe thread (MIP), 1.05" across

What fits

3/4" MHT x 3/4" FIP adapter

On the package: 3/4 in. MHT x 3/4 in. FIP

  • One end takes your hose, and the other screws onto the pipe.
  • If the pipe is connected to a water supply, shut the water off first.
  • Wrap thread tape around the pipe’s threads only, the same way the threads spiral (clockwise as you look at the end), starting at the first thread. Don’t tape the hose end. It seals with its rubber washer.

3/4" hose thread and 3/4" pipe thread are almost the same width (1.0625" vs 1.050"), but hose thread has 11.5 threads per inch and pipe thread 14, so the threads don’t mesh. Hose thread is not compatible with other thread systems.

Why the obvious part often doesn’t fit

Plumbing parts are named by nominal size, a label rather than a measurement. A 3/4" garden hose thread is about 1-1/16" across, and 3/4" pipe thread is 1.05" across. They look the same, but the hose thread has 11.5 threads per inch and the pipe thread 14, so one won’t screw onto the other without an adapter. Drip tubing varies even more. Tubing sold as 1/2" comes in several real sizes, and the outside diameter decides which compression fitting to use.

Not sure what you’re holding?

Use Identify it: pick where the part is and answer a question or two, or measure it. It names the part and shows what connects to it.

Common questions

Will a garden hose screw onto a 3/4 inch pipe thread?

No. Garden hose thread (GHT) is about 1.06" across with 11.5 threads per inch; 3/4" pipe thread (NPT) is 1.05" across with 14, so the threads don't mesh. Use a 3/4" male hose thread x 3/4" female pipe thread (MHT x FIP) adapter. If the pipe part has threads inside, use MHT x MIP.

What does FHT x MIP mean on an adapter?

FHT is female hose thread (threads inside, like the end of a hose that goes on a spigot). MHT is male hose thread. MIP (or MPT, MNPT) is male pipe thread, threads on the outside; FIP (FPT, FNPT) is female pipe thread, threads inside. An adapter is named by its two ends.

Do I need thread tape on a garden hose adapter?

Not on the hose side: hose threads seal with the rubber washer in the female end. Put tape or pipe dope on the pipe-thread side only, because tapered pipe threads seal on the threads. Tape goes on the male (outside) pipe threads, wrapped the way the threads spiral.

Where we get our information from

The adapter names and thread sizes come from published thread standards and the makers’ own spec sheets, catalogs and instructions. Checked against published data from BrassCraft, SharkBite, Charlotte Pipe, International Code Council and Swagelok (plus 23 more).
