Garden hose to 3/4 inch pipe adapter

If the pipe has threads on the outside, use a 3/4" MHT x 3/4" FIP brass adapter. Don’t try the hose on the pipe directly: they’re almost the same width, but hose thread has 11.5 threads per inch and 3/4" pipe thread has 14, so they don’t mesh.

  • One end takes your hose, and the other screws onto the pipe.
  • If the pipe is connected to a water supply, shut the water off first.
  • Wrap thread tape around the pipe’s threads only, the same way the threads spiral (clockwise as you look at the end), starting at the first thread. Don’t tape the hose end. It seals with its rubber washer.

3/4" hose thread and 3/4" pipe thread are almost the same width (1.0625" vs 1.050"), but hose thread has 11.5 threads per inch and pipe thread 14, so the threads don’t mesh. Hose thread is not compatible with other thread systems.

Common questions

What if the 3/4 inch fitting has threads inside?

3/4" MHT x 3/4" MIP adapter. One end takes your hose, and the other screws into the fitting.

How do I connect an outdoor faucet or the male end of a hose to 3/4 inch pipe?

3/4" FHT x 3/4" FIP adapter. One end takes your outdoor faucet or hose male end, and the other screws onto the pipe.

Is garden hose thread 3/4 inch NPT?

No. Garden hose thread (GHT) is sold as 3/4", but it has 11.5 threads per inch and seals with a washer; 3/4" NPT has 14 and seals on its tapered threads with tape or sealant. Count the threads over one inch to tell them apart.
