Copper pipe size chart

Copper pipe is 1/8" wider across the outside than its size, so 1/2" copper is 0.625" (5/8", 15.9 mm) across in Type K, L and M alike. The types differ in wall thickness, which sets the inside diameter.

Copper tube size and the nominal size

The same rule makes 3/4" copper 0.875" (7/8") across and 1" copper 1.125". This sizing is called copper tube size (CTS). PEX and CTS CPVC are made to it too, so 1/2" PEX and 1/2" CTS CPVC are also 0.625" across.

SharkBite sizes its push-to-connect fittings by CTS, so a 1/2" fitting takes copper, CTS CPVC or PEX of that size. PVC and steel use iron pipe size, which is wider: see the PVC pipe size chart.

Type K, L and M

Type K has the thickest wall and Type M the thinnest, at every size. Rigid copper is printed in a color for its type: green for K, blue for L, red for M, and yellow for DWV drain tube. For how the types are used, see Type L vs Type M copper.

DWV copper

Copper drain, waste and vent tube has the same outside as the other types at each size and a thinner wall.

ACR tube

Copper tube for air conditioning and refrigeration (ACR) is named by its actual outside diameter. 3/8" ACR tube is 0.375" across, the outside of 1/4" plumbing tube, and 7/8" ACR is the outside of 3/4" plumbing tube.

Measuring copper pipe

Measure across the outside with a caliper and take 1/8" off to get the size. For one size across every kind of pipe, see the 1/2", 3/4" and 1" pipe OD pages.

Common questions

What is the inside diameter of 1/2 inch Type L copper?

0.545 inch (13.8 mm), with a 0.040 inch wall. Type K is 0.527 inch inside and Type M 0.569 inch.

Is 1/2 inch PEX the same inside as 1/2 inch copper?

No. They match on the outside, but Uponor's 1/2 inch AquaPEX is 0.475 inch inside, smaller than any of the three copper types.

What size is 1 inch copper pipe in mm?

1.125 inches is 28.6 mm across the outside. Inside, Type L is 1.025 inches (26.0 mm).
