What Adapter For
Your answer

Hydraulic adapter finder

Pick the port on your machine and the end on your hose, and get the adapter that joins them, named by its two ends, with Parker’s part number where Parker lists one.

What’s the port on the machine?

Port size

Dash sizes count sixteenths of an inch: -8 is a 1/2" pipe port, or an ORB port for 1/2" tube, which has a 3/4-16 thread. Not sure which you have? Identify it first.

What’s on the end of the hose?

Hose end size

The adapter

-8 ORB male × -6 JIC male adapter

Its -8 ORB male end goes in the -8 ORB port (3/4-16), and the -6 JIC female swivel (9/16-18) screws onto its -6 JIC male end

Parker’s part for this pair is the 6-8 F5OX (Catalog 4300, p. B15).

  • Use an adapter whose published working pressure is at or above your machine’s maximum.
  • The ORB end seals with its O-ring in the port’s chamfer, not on the thread: no tape or sealant on it.
  • The JIC end seals metal to metal on its 37° cone, so it takes no sealant.

Why the obvious part often doesn’t fit

Pressure ratings

Every hose, tube and fitting in a line must have a published maximum working pressure at or above the system’s maximum, and an assembly is rated at its weakest part. Parker prints each adapter’s rating in its catalog, and it changes with the size and the material, so check the rating of the adapter you use.

Common questions

What adapter goes from an ORB port to a JIC hose?

A straight adapter with an ORB male end and a JIC 37° male end. Parker calls it an F5OX: a -6 JIC hose on a -8 ORB port takes a 6-8 F5OX, and the first number is the JIC end.

Can I put an NPT fitting in an ORB port?

No. An ORB port has a straight inch thread and seals on an O-ring, while NPT is a tapered pipe thread. Use an adapter with an ORB male end.

Do I need thread tape on a hydraulic adapter?

Only on a pipe-thread end. NPT and BSPT seal on their threads and need a sealant; ORB, BSPP, JIC and ORFS ends seal on an O-ring, washer or cone, so keep tape and sealant off them.

Where we get our information from

The adapters and the notes on ports come from Parker’s tube fittings catalog, the threads from Swagelok and Parker, the pressure rule from Parker’s safety guide, and the safety lines from Parker, Gates and the UK Health and Safety Executive. Checked against published data from Parker Hannifin, Gates, UK Health and Safety Executive and Swagelok.
