Your answer

Faucet adapter for a portable dishwasher, washer or water filter

Unscrew the aerator and screw on a snap coupling faucet adapter (15/16"-27 male or 55/64"-27 female), and the portable dishwasher’s or washer’s hose connector snaps onto it. A faucet-mount water filter screws on in the aerator’s place, with an adapter from its own box if it needs one.

The filter screws straight on, usually with no adapter

Brita says a spout with threads on the outside most likely needs no adapter. PUR has you try the filter first, then the external-thread adapter (adapter 1) from its box.

On the package: The filter’s own mount, or PUR adapter 1

Available on Amazon

  • Take off the aerator and its washer before you fit the filter.
  • If nothing fits, call Brita Consumer Services (1-800-24-BRITA in the US) or email PUR at support@pur.com.

One of the adapters in the filter’s box

A spout with threads inside takes an adapter and its washer. Brita’s FF-100 comes with two, and PUR’s systems have adapters 2 and 3 for these spouts.

On the package: Internal-thread faucet adapter, with its washer

Available on Amazon

  • Tighten the adapter by hand. Brita warns that pliers can damage the threading. A coin in the notch on its adapter helps turn a stiff one.
  • When none of the adapters fits, contact the filter’s maker. Both PUR and Brita ask you to.

A thread adapter for the hidden aerator first

On a Delta faucet with a hidden aerator, the RP51505 adapter gives the spout standard 55/64"-27 male threads, on the outside.

On the package: Delta RP51505, or the adapter your faucet’s maker sells

  • Then fit the filter as on any spout with threads outside.

A different faucet, without a pull-out or spray head

PUR’s faucet filters don’t fit pull-out or handheld faucets, and Brita’s FF-100 can’t attach to a faucet with a built-in spray feature at its end.

  • Delta’s FAQ says a water filter can go on any Delta kitchen faucet that isn’t pull-out or pull-down.

A snap coupling faucet adapter, Standard thread

It screws on where the aerator was, and the machine’s hose connector locks onto it. Whirlpool and GE pack one with their portable dishwashers.

On the package: Dishwasher snap adapter, 15/16 in.-27M or 55/64 in.-27F

  • On GE’s adapter, use the thin washer if the spout’s threads are outside, both washers if they’re inside.
  • Danco makes replacements with a small or a large snap coupling. Match the machine’s connector, or order by the machine’s model number.
  • Pull the connector’s collar down, push it onto the adapter until it snaps, then let go.

A fitting that adapts the spout to Standard thread

Danco’s snap adapters and GE’s are made for Standard spouts, the quarter-size aerator thread. A nickel-size aerator is a Junior (13/16"-27 male, 3/4"-27 female), and penny and dime sizes are metric.

On the package: An adapter from your spout’s thread to 15/16 in.-27M or 55/64 in.-27F

  • GE sends faucets whose threads don’t match its adapter to a hardware or plumbing supply store for a fitting, and Whirlpool to a parts catalog or a plumber.
  • Take the old aerator and the machine’s faucet adapter with you, so the fitting can be matched to both.

An adapter for the hidden aerator, then the snap adapter

A hidden (cache) aerator sits up inside the spout, leaving no outside thread for a faucet adapter. On Delta’s Victorian, Pilar and Talbott faucets, Delta’s RP51505 turns those inside threads into standard 55/64"-27 male.

On the package: Delta RP51505, or your faucet maker’s own adapter

  • A key for the aerator’s coin size takes it out. For other brands, look up an adapter by the faucet’s brand and model.
  • With the cache adapter on, the snap adapter screws onto it.

A faucet that isn’t pull-out or pull-down

Delta says never to connect a portable dishwasher to a pull-out or pull-down kitchen faucet, because pressure changes while it runs can rupture the hose.

  • Delta allows a portable dishwasher on any of its kitchen faucets without a pull-out or pull-down head.
  • Delta’s help page on portable washers says never to connect an appliance to a pull-out or pull-down faucet wand.

Before you connect

Taking the machine off

Turn the faucet off first, then press the button on the hose connector to let the pressure out. Whirlpool’s connector comes off when you lift it slightly, press the thumb release and pull it down. Tip it upside down over the sink to empty it.

If the faucet leaks

A leak where the adapter meets the spout may only need the adapter tightened. GE sends leaks from the joint between the faucet’s swinging arm and its fixed base to a plumber.

Common questions

Does one snap adapter fit both a portable dishwasher and a portable washer?

Danco says its snap adapters connect any device with a female snap coupling to the faucet. The snap size, small or large, still has to match the machine's connector.

Why won't the adapter thread onto my faucet?

The spout may be a smaller size than Standard, or metric. Hold the old aerator next to a coin: quarter-size is Standard, while nickel, penny and dime sizes need a fitting that adapts the spout first.

Can a faucet water filter and a portable dishwasher share a faucet?

Each one screws on where the aerator was, so only one fits at a time. Take the filter off before you fit the dishwasher's adapter.
