How to connect a garden hose to a kitchen faucet

  • Unscrew the aerator (the little screen at the tip). If there’s nothing to grip, it’s a hidden aerator. Neoperl and Danco sell keys to remove them, and Delta sells an adapter (RP51505) that turns its hidden-aerator threads into the standard 55/64"-27 male size.
  • Check the size with a coin. A standard aerator is about the size of a quarter. A nickel-size one is a Junior (13/16" male / 3/4" female) and needs a Junior adapter.
  • Screw the adapter on where the aerator was, then screw your hose onto its male hose thread.

Faucet aerator threads are fine (27 threads per inch) and under an inch across. Garden hose thread is 1-1/16" across, with 11.5. The adapter has the faucet threads on one side and hose thread on the other. Never connect a portable dishwasher to a pull-out or pull-down faucet, because pressure changes can rupture the spray hose. Check your faucet maker’s guidance before hooking a hose to one.

A female aerator has threads inside and screws onto a spout with threads outside; a male aerator is the reverse. The faucet-to-hose adapter fits the Standard size.

Common questions

How do I know my aerator size?

Compare it with a coin: a Standard aerator is about the size of a quarter, a Junior about a nickel, a Tiny Junior about a penny, and a Tom Thumb about a dime. If the aerator has threads on the outside it's male; threads inside, female. Take it to the store with you.
