2" PVC, ABS and steel pipe are 2.375" (60.3 mm) across the outside. 2" copper, PEX and CTS CPVC are 2.125" (2-1/8"), and 2" cast iron drain pipe is 2.30" to 2.35".

PVC, ABS and CPVC: Charlotte Pipe’s average OD and minimum wall; its Corzan Schedule 80 CPVC is iron pipe size. Copper: the Copper Development Association’s nominal sizes. Steel: Wheatland Tube’s table. PEX: Uponor AquaPEX, whose table gives OD and ID. A cell marked n/a isn’t in the maker’s table. Cast iron: Charlotte Pipe’s barrel sizes and nominal wall. A no-hub pipe’s spigot end has a bead 2.41" across.
Charlotte Pipe’s solid-wall Schedule 40 PVC is marked for both pressure (ASTM D1785) and drain (ASTM D2665) use, so it’s the same pipe either way. Its foam core PVC and ABS drain pipe have the same outside and minimum wall, but they’re for drainage only, with no pressure rating, and printed “Not for Pressure”.
What fits a 2 inch pipe
- Copper, PEX and CTS CPVC: SharkBite sizes its 2" push-to-connect fittings 2" CTS, for pipe 2-1/8" across, and they take copper, CTS CPVC and PEX.
- PEX clamps and hangers: for its PEX, Uponor says to use copper tube size supports and clamps whenever possible.
- No-hub cast iron: it joins with hubless couplings (CISPI 310). Charlotte Pipe doesn’t recommend or warrant its no-hub pipe joined with unshielded ones.
- Two kinds of drain pipe: the outsides differ by material (PVC 2.375", no-hub cast iron 2.35", hub and spigot 2.30", copper 2.125"), so measure both pipes and use a coupling made for both before you join them.
Measuring your pipe
Measure across an open end with a caliper or tape. If you can’t reach an end, wrap a tape around the pipe and divide by 3.14: 2" PVC is about 7.46" around, and 2" copper about 6.68". To tell the kinds of pipe apart, see what pipe do I have?
