A hose clamp’s size number is its SAE size, and each maker prints the range of diameters it closes on. The right size is the one whose range is just larger than the hose’s outside diameter.
Measure across the hose while it’s pushed onto its fitting. Type decimals, such as 1.1 inches or 28 mm.
Which clamp size?
SAE 12
For a hose 1.1" (27.9 mm) across, the smallest size whose range is just larger than the hose.

How to measure the hose
Push the hose onto its fitting first, since it stretches over the barb or pipe. Murray’s guidance is to measure the outside in three places with a caliper and average them, then choose the range that’s just slightly larger than that. Murray advises against using a larger size than you need.

Each range is the diameter the clamp closes on, smallest to largest. n/a: that maker’s line has no clamp of that size.

Why the ranges differ
In every row both makers print, Breeze’s Power-Seal and Murray’s Gold Seal H have the same maximum. Some minimums differ. At SAE 16 the range starts at 13/16" for Breeze and 3/4" for Murray. From SAE 72 up, Breeze’s Power-Seal ranges start much smaller (1-7/8" at SAE 72, against Murray’s 4-1/16").
Band width changes the range too. Breeze’s Mini line, with a 5/16" band, covers less at the same SAE number from size 16 up, and it stops at SAE 32. Breeze describes it as generally used on small hoses, such as air and fuel lines.
Tightening and materials
- Torque: Murray gives 30 to 40 in-lb for its H series and 35 to 45 in-lb for its other Gold Seal series. If the hose or fitting maker gives a figure, use theirs.
- Stainless grades: Murray’s HLSS series, all 316 stainless steel, is the one it lists for plumbing, wells, municipal drains, irrigation and marine use.
